BOATING SAFETY

The Plumsted Police Department and the Safe Boating Council brings you these boating safety tips as a community service.

DO:
  • Wear a life jacket. They float, you won't.
  • Know the water and area you will be boating on. If in doubt, check with local authorities or the Coast Guard
  • Keep a good lookout while underway.
  • Shut your engines off when people are in the water near your boat.
  • Observe the nautical "rules-of-the-road".
  • Check the weather forecast before getting underway.
  • Keep a balanced load and a trim boat.
  • Know your limitations and experience. Don't handle a boat too large or too complicated for your personal experience.
  • Observe the right's of way and posted warnings in the area.
  • Check your boat and equipment before leaving on your trip.

DON'T:
  • Overload your boat.
  • Stand up in a small boat.
  • Ride on the gunwale, bow, seat backs, or anyplace that is not designed for sitting.
  • Drink alcohol while boating.

Remember to use common sense when you are on the water. If you feel something is dangerous- it probably is. Boat smart from the start.

Wear Your Life Jacket!
