A MESSAGE FROM THE PUBLIC SAFETY DIRECTOR

The safety of your child is a great responsibility. Each year families suffer the loss of a loved child because of accidents or negligence. I urge you to do you part in protecting your child. While it is hard to believe any parent would purposely place their child in harms way, many do so on a daily basis. Each time they ride unsecured in a motor vehicle, you subject them possible injury or death. Even the shortest trip to the store can be costly. Please take the time to review these suggestions provided by the US Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the NJ Division of Highway Traffic Safety. Together we can make a difference.

Automobile Crashes Are The Leading Cause Of Death and Injury

It's not just crashes that cause injury and death among our children: a sudden car stop may also cause serious injury to a child that is not properly secured in a car. The following suggestions will help you keep your child safe. bey traffic signals and to know what they mean.

Keep your children buckled at all times. Use the child safety seat when they are small and the safety belt when they are older.

  • Do not allow them to stand in the car
  • Do not carry them in your lap or in your arms
  • Do not buckle up more than one person with a single set belt
  • Do not allow your children to ride in the back of a pick-up truck

New Jersey Motor Vehicle Law 39:3-76.2 requires each driver transporting a child under the age of eight years and weighing less that 80 pounds to secure the child in a child passenger restrain system or booster seat. The law also makes certain other requirements for front seat passengers and drivers.

Every Ride Counts
DO NOT start the car unless each passenger is securely buckled, and set a good example by buckling yourself up!

QUESTIONS and ANSWERS
Q: Families may have several children. What can I do to ensure a safe ride for each of my children?

A:Make sure that EACH CHILD is sitting and buckled up EVERY TIME he or she rides in a car. Get each small child in a child safety seat that is correct for his or her size and weight, and fasten each of your older children's seat belts until they learn to do it by themselves.

Q:Child safety seats are expensive. What can I do if I don't have enough money to get one?

A:Child safety seats are not a luxury. If you cannot buy one, you may lease or even borrow one. Many communities provide programs through which you can get them at a low cost or for free.

Q:My children resist being buckled up. What can I do?

A:Your children's safety is your responsibility at all times, especially when they are riding in the car. ALWAYS BUCKLE YOUR CHILDREN UP, even if they complain. In no time they will get used to it....Start Now! Remember: IT IS THE LAW.

YOUR CHILDREN'S SAFETY IS IN YOUR HANDS

BUCKLE THEM UP AT ALL TIMES!
