I thought this week would be a good time to address an issue that comes to my attention on a regular basis: Speeding!

In daily conversations it becomes apparent that most drivers do not understand the legal concept of speed limit. To break it down into two words: Speed=The rate, pace or velocity of an object i.e. how fast it is going. Limit=The boundary, edge or border i.e. the point not to be exceeded. What does this mean to the motorist?

The speed limit is the maximum speed a vehicle may travel! Title 39:4-98 is the NJ Motor Vehicle Traffic law that limits the rates of speed to 25 MPH in Schools, business and residential districts, 35 MPH in suburban business and residential districts, and 50 MPH in all other locations except when otherwise posted.

Speed limits are Per se limits. Common myths suggest that vehicles can travel anywhere from 5 to 10 miles an hour over the limit. Many believe this to be a law. THIS IS NOT TRUE. A violation of law occurs as soon as your vehicle exceeds the limit: 51 MPH in a 50 MPH zone is breaking the law. What most motorists believe to be law is actually the police officer's discretion concerning their are willingness to stop or issue a summons when a violation is observed. That's right! It's up to the officer. The fine for speeding from 1 to 9 MPH over the limit is $78.00 plus possible costs to the courts and can be doubled for speeds 20 MPH or more over the limit or in work zones.

When you get behind the wheel consider this: You don't really know what the officer's limit is. Why take a chance? Drive at or below the limit in good weather, even slower in foul weather, around hills and intersections, and save $78.00 and between 2-5 points on your license depending on the speed.

In the coming months, the Plumsted Police will be monitoring speed at several areas such as Hopkins Rd, Hawkin Rd., N. Main St., our schools and the residential areas. Slow down, obey the law, drive safely.
