PLUMSTED POLICE
TRAFFIC SAFETY

Speed Control
The Plumsted Township Police Department takes traffic safety very seriously.
Our photo shows just one method we use to reduce the accident and fatality rate. Several Highways that can become congested and are heavily traveled bisect the township. Routes 537, 528, and 539 all run though the township and provide commuters connections to other municipalities and points of interest.

In an effort to reduce accident and injuries, the Police Dept. participates in several activities:

Operation ABC Mobilization

In 2002 the Plumsted Police Department will participate with law enforcement agencies across the country in cracking down on drivers who do not buckle up themselves or their children, and drivers who drink and drive. This years Mobilizations will be May 20-27 and November 25-December 1. This effort includes increased public awareness, warnings, traffic stops, stationary observation points, and media releases.

Traffic Engineering

The Police Department works cooperatively with the Ocean County Engineer and State Department of Transportation to re-evaluate roadways with traffic concerns. Roadways with identified or potential problems are reviewed by the Police Department. Records are compiled and observations are made. The Police then coordinate with the township committee liaison and forward requests for review to the County Engineer.

The following roadways are under review at this time:

Evergreen Road- Speed Limit review between Main St. and Bright Rd.
C.R. 537 & Evergreen Rd.-Traffic Signal, road widening
O.C. Rt. 528 (Lakewood Road) between Hawkin and C.R. 539- Speed Limits, no passing zones
Hawkin Rd & C.R. 528- Traffic Signal-Speed Reduction

The following roadways are pending:

Re-alignment of Hopkins Rd. at C.R. 539
Reconstruction and Resurfacing of C.R. 539

School Safety/Traffic

The Police Department works with the New Egypt School System to insure the safe arrival and departure of our students. The Police Department presently employs 6 crossing guards that work during the school hours to safely cross school children and pedestrians at critical intersections on the way to and from school.

The Police also provide officers for traffic enforcement, and are involved in site reviews, speaking with parents, and a cooperative effort to inform the parents and motorists of proper and safe motoring in the area of the schools.

DWI Enforcement

Through various grants and money provided by the State of New Jersey and the Courts, Police officers work overtime on special DWI patrols. These patrols target intoxicated drivers and traffic enforcement of the drinking driving laws. A special emphasis is placed on underage drinking and driving.

Public Awareness

Through media such as newspapers, radio, public speaking, public appearances at community events, and this web site, the Police Department promotes prevention and compliance. Part of the awareness campaign is the use of the Departments Sped Monitoring Board. The board is placed in strategic locations where speeding has been identified as a contributing problem to safety. The monitor may be used alone or in conjunction with an officer operating radar in the near vicinity.

Bicycle Safety Program

The Bicycle Safety program provides a police officer to inspect a bicycle and the rider's equipment for compliance with safety regulations and NJ law. We provide brochures and outreach at community events. We conduct "Bike Rodeos" certain events. The Bike Rodeo provides the opportunity for the cycling enthusiast to test his or her skills in such areas as riding within lines, turning, cornering, stopping and balance.
