Walking
safely is important for the whole family.
We are all
pedestrians at some time during the day-when walking on the sidewalk or
crossing a street and even when getting off a bus or out of a car. Thousands of
pedestrians are victims of traffic crashes. You can prevent being the next
victim. Always cross a street at the corner.
Have your noticed that
cars reduce their speed when they get to a corner? That's why corners and
crosswalks are the safest places to cross a street. At a corner:
- STOP at the curb.
- Look to your left, then to your right and then
again to your left.
- Now, cross, but keep looking.
For your safety and that of others, always cross at
the corner, even when it means walking a few more steps.
Obey traffic signals.
It is important
to obey traffic signals and to know what they mean.
"DON'T WALK"
If you are on the sidewalk,
do not start crossing. If you have already started, finish promptly.
"WALK"
You may walk while still
paying attention to turning cars.
Do
not depend on anybody or anything.
Do not take risks.
When crossing a street,
walking between parked cars or getting off a bus or out of a car, always remain
ALERT. Pay attention to the drivers,
to engine noises, to lights, and to the position of the wheels. Only you can
decide which is the safest moment to cross a street.
New Egypt Downtown Area
The
Plumsted Police Department invites you to visit the New Egypt MAINSTREETS area. Visit the shops and stores, eat lunch, have
a dessert, take a stroll to the park area, enjoy the lake, and walk safely.
Pedestrians have the right of way in New Jersey if they are properly crossing
at a crosswalk. While motorists must stop and yield the right of way, not all
do. Make sure you have eye-to-eye contact with the driver of a vehicle before
entering the roadway. If you are motoring in the downtown area, be courteous to
pedestrians and stop to allow them to cross. Together we can make a visit to
the downtown area a safe, enjoyable visit.
