Plumsted Hosts National Day of Prayer
|
On Thursday, May 1st,
the National Day of Prayer will be observed in the court room of our Municipal
Building,
121
Evergreen Road, New Egypt,
beginning
at 7:30 p.m. for the 15th consecutive year. Local residents are
organizing the
event and are encouraging the public of all faiths to attend this
year’s Prayer
Day Observance. This year’s theme is: “The Lord is my strength and
shield…”
from the Bible verse Psalm 28:7.
The United States Congress
and 48 States, including the New Jersey State Legislature, have passed
the
“Prayer Day Act”. In 1988, Federal legislation was passed unanimously
by
Congress and signed by President Reagan establishing the first Thursday
of May
in each year as the National Day of Prayer.
To this day, we continue to
pledge our allegiance as one Nation under God; to pay our debts with
coin and
dollar which attests, “in God we trust”; to sing “God bless America”
and
“God shed His grace on thee”. Our National Anthem, the Star Spangled
Banner, in
the fourth stanza reads, “and this be our motto: In God is our Trust.”
Every
session of the United States Congress, the New Jersey State Legislature
and the
U.S. Supreme Court begin with prayer. The United State Supreme Court is
called
into every session with the words, “God save the United States
and this Honorable
Court!”
In 1861, Chief Justice Chase
of the U. S. Supreme Court wrote the following in a letter to the
Director of
the Mint: “No nation can be strong except in the strength of God, or
safe
except in His defense. The trust of our people in God should be
declared on our
national coins.” In 1865, Congress enacted legislation authorizing the
phrase
“In God We Trust” to be placed on certain coins.
The phrase, “Separation of
Church and State,” is not written in the First Amendment Bill of
Rights, nor
appears anywhere in our Constitution. The first Amendment reads,
“Congress
shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or
prohibiting the
free exercise thereof.” The intent was to prohibit Congress from
establishing a
National religion, such as the Colonists were faced with back in Britain
with
the National Church of England. The intent of the First Amendment is to
keep
religion free from government, while assuring the freedom of religious
people
to be in our government.
Consider the following
quotes of our Nation’s Founding Fathers and Presidents:
“It is impossible to rightly
govern the world without God and the Bible.”-President George
Washington.
“The future and success of America
is not
in this Constitution, but in the laws of God upon which this
Constitution is
founded.”-President James Madison.
“I tremble for my Country
when I reflect that God is just; that His justice cannot sleep
forever.”-President Thomas Jefferson.
Residents
are encouraged to mark their calendars to attend and support the following
upcoming events: Cruz Night on Main Street, Thursday, May 8th from 6
to 9 pm featuring the display of classic and antique cars; Relay for Life
event, supporting the American Cancer Society, on Friday, May 9th
with opening ceremonies at 4:00 pm and continuing all night until 6:00 am on
May 10th; and New Egypt Day Family Street Festival in downtown New
Egypt on Saturday, May 17th from 11am to 4pm. Additionally, that
evening at dusk, our Main Street Promotion Committee will be hosting an
“Outdoor Family Movie Night” at the Recreation Park.
