Plumsted’s Green Committee Applies For $10,000 Grant
|
|
|
|
Last year, Plumsted Township
became the first municipality in Ocean
County to establish a
“Green Committee” and this month, has applied for a $10,000 Sustainable Jersey
Grant, funded by Wal-Mart. Plumsted’s “Green Technology Advisory Committee”
(GTAC) intends to use the grant funds to improve the energy efficiency of all
Township buildings. The project will
focus on four energy efficiency areas: (1) upgrading lights to T-8 and compact
fluorescent technologies and provide occupant sensor controls; (2) increasing
the R value of insulation and utilizing weather stripping; (3) upgrading water
faucets to low flow types for water conservation; and (4) providing
programmable HVAC thermostats for night setbacks, weekends and holidays.
Plumsted’s Green Technology
Advisory Committee officers are: Ken Fry, Chairman; Mark Reme, Vice Chairman;
David Menaker, Secretary; and members Bill Masi; Gary Pizzuti; Don Reed; Rick
Sehein; Jake Wig and Township Committeeman Steve Reed.
Residents who may have an interest in serving on the Green Committee are
encouraged to contact the Municipal Clerk’s office.
The State Legislature
recently authorized the “Green
Buildings and
Environmental Sustainability Plan” as the 16th element to Municipal Master
Plans. Plumsted’s Green Committee has met informally with the Township Land Use
Board to begin discussions of utilizing renewable, sustainable and alternate
forms of energy, as well as, standardized green building construction.
This year’s Memorial Day
Parade on Monday, May 25th, will begin at 1 p.m. on North Main Street
at Bright Road
and continue along Main Street
to Jacobstown Road
and conclude on Meadowbrook Lane
at the American Legion Building.
The American Legion will host the Memorial Day observance when the parade
concludes and serve refreshments.
In observance of the
Memorial Day weekend, the recycling center, including the leaf and branch site,
will be closed on Saturday, May 23rd.
Ocean County has awarded a bid for the
reconstruction of the Route 539 and 528 intersection and work is expected to
begin this summer. In an effort to minimize the use of detour routes,
alternating lanes of traffic will be in effect during the project to keep the
intersection open. However, there will be twelve (12) days maximum by contract
to close the intersection and utilize detour routes while the hill in the
center of the intersection is graded down to improve sight distance and driver
safety.
The Township has obtained a
copy of the detour map route that will be in effect for the 12 day period. If
anyone would like to review the detour map, please contact the Plumsted
Municipal Clerk’s office. Anyone who would like to attend this project’s
pre-construction meeting with representatives from the County Engineer’s
office, the contractor and Township officials, please inform Plumsted’s
Municipal Clerk’s office with name and contact information for notification.
Steve Beverly, Pastor of
Bible Baptist Church in New Egypt and Chaplain of the Township Police Department,
recently informed the Township that he was unable to continue as the Township’s
Recycling Coordinator. Anyone having an interest in the Recycling Coordinator
part-time position, please contact the Municipal Clerk’s office at 609-758-2241
ext. 101. Just prior to leaving the Recycling position, Pastor Beverly
compiled, produced and distributed the Township’s recycling brochure with
volunteer assistance from members of the Bible Baptist Church Youth Group, the N.J. Christian
Academy and Girl Scout Troop
399.
This year’s Relay for Life
event, in conjunction with the American Cancer Society, is being held at the Plumsted Township Recreation
Park, Brindletown Road, New Egypt, on Saturday,
May 30th and continuing through the night to Sunday morning, May 31st.
