Grant Applications and 2009 Budget Approved

The Township Committee
authorized, during its’ public meeting of June 3rd, the submittal of
three grant applications to the N.J. Department of Transportation requesting
$150,000 in state aid for paving and drainage improvements of two streets and
the construction of two additional parking lots for downtown New Egypt.
The two streets for paving
and drainage improvements are Applegate
Lane and Helen
Street. The grant application for the improvements
to these two streets totals $68,000.
Two additional parking lots
for downtown New Egypt will be constructed. Vacant lots at 6 Main Street and 11 Evergreen Road will be improved for
public parking with grant funding in the amount of $82,000 from the D.O.T. Town
Centers Grant program. The Township Committee qualified the New Egypt downtown
as a designated “Town Center” by the State Planning Commission in 1996, the
first in Ocean County.
Only municipalities in the
State with Town Center
designations are eligible for the D.O.T. Town Centers Grant program that has
previously awarded Plumsted Township $150,000 for the Pedestrian
Bridge across Oakford
Lake and $125,000 to construct the
public parking lot directly behind the Township’s Welcome Center
on Main Street.
The 2009 Municipal Budget of
$3,615,000 was adopted by the Plumsted Township Committee on June 3rd.
The 2009 budget reduces spending by $78,000 from last year’s $3,693,000 adopted
budget. The tax rate will increase by two (2) cents, from 9 cents to 11 cents
per $100 assessed valuation ($77 on average), to primarily restore the loss of
$147,000 in State Aid from the Governor’s 2009 and 2010 State Fiscal Year
Budgets.
With the loss in State Aid,
the Township’s 2009 budget freezes salaries, with the exception of contractual
obligations. However, the Township Committee established a priority to review
the budgetary and financial status in November to determine if it would be
fiscally responsible to provide its employees with a much deserved cost of
living adjustment.
The total tax levy,
including the reserve for uncollected taxes, is $1,195,000 compared to last
year’s $975,000. For the average assessed home in Plumsted of $384,000, the
total municipal government portion of the property tax bill will be $422 for
the year, an increase of $ 77 to help offset loss state aid.
According to the Ocean County Board of Taxation,
Plumsted Township’s average tax bill of $422 for
the municipal government portion of property taxes continues to be the lowest
in the County and 3.6 times lower than County-wide average of $1,528.
“Cruz Nites,” featuring the display of classic
and antique cars, returns to the New
Egypt Downtown Main Street on the second Thursday
of each month, from June 11 to September 10 (6 p.m. to 9 p.m.).
