Meals on Wheels - More than Just Meals

Chances are good that you have at least heard of Meals on Wheels. Perhaps you or someone you know has volunteered to deliver the meals or maybe you know someone who is or has been a recipient of their services. But there's probably a lot that you don't know. For instance, last year Meals on Wheels of Ocean County provided nearly a quarter of a million meals to over 1,600 seniors; That in itself is a lot and a great service to seniors who are food insecure. But Meals on Wheels is more than just meals and Community Relations Specialist Heather de Jong would like to tell you about their outreach program, community cafes and other services. So, join us at SOS on Wednesday, May 8 at 10:00 AM for what promises to be a very informative presentation. Light refreshments will be served. Please call SOS at 609-758-2241 ext. 111 to register.

MISSION STATEMENT

Senior Outreach Services (SOS) is a NJ Nonprofit Corporation which seeks to increase the understanding of the impact of aging on both the individual and society, and works for change both social and individual, in order to enhance the participation of the elderly as active members of society.

Shall attempt to identify service needs of the senior community, connect seniors with services currently available and when possibly, provides services directly.

HISTORY

SEQ CHAPTER SOS is a fairly young organization having its beginnings in 2007 when our founder, Leigh Ann Vinciguerra, became aware of an urgent need to connect Plumsted seniors with available services.  She approached then Mayor Ron Dancer who agreed and together they took steps to address the need by contacting people they knew who might be interested in helping and by putting out the call for volunteers in the New Egypt Press.  The group, originally named Senior Outreach Search, had small beginnings; a handful of people meeting in Leigh Ann's living room.  As the group grew, office space and equipment was provided by the township in the Welcome Center on Main Street in New Egypt and community meetings were held there, as well as in local churches and Jensen's Community Clubhouse.  When the Community Room was completed on the lower level of Plumsted Township's Municipal Building, SOS got their permanent home.  With the help of Plumsted Township and our volunteers, SOS has made great strides in its short history by expanding its membership becoming incorporated as a 501(c)3 charitable not-for-profit organization, enabling us to provide even more assistance and socialization to our seniors.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

You do not need to be a senior to be a senior volunteer!  Perhaps you have a special talent or an idea for a new service or activity.  If you would like to offer some of your time, please contact the SOS office by phone (609) 758-2241, ext 111 or email:  Senior Outreach of Plumsted .
