Memorial Day 21-Gun Salutes

On Memorial Day, May 29, McKaig-Test-Mullen American Legion Post 455, New Egypt, will be mourning U.S. military personnel who have died while serving the United States armed forces. The highest military honor, the 21-gun salute, will be rendered at each of the following cemeteries:

0700 hours- Catholic Cemetery, Evergreen Road

0715 hours- Zoar Cemetery, Brown Lane

0730 hours- Zion Cemetery, Lakewood Road

A concluding ceremony at Zion Cemetery will immediately follow the salute there. It will consist of poems (Flanders Field, et al.) as well as attendance by local dignitaries. Additionally, placement, by the Sons of the American Revolution, of the plaque dedicated to Pvt. Thomas Chaffy will occur. Chaffy, who is buried in Zion Cemetery, served in the N.J. 1st Regiment from 1780-1783. The actual dedication of the plaque will take place on or about Veterans Day, November 11, 2023.
