A Message from our Deputy Mayor

14" Thuja tree at the gazebo PT

Fellow Residents:

As an elected township official, the owner of a local business, Big Woods Farm and Nursery and a resident of Plumsted Township, I want to thank the community for their encouraging comments about my donation of a second township Christmas tree, located downtown, near the gazebo.

The 14’ Thuja, a non-traditional variety, was requested by the Plumsted Environmental Committee. Such trees are low maintenance, as well as extremely versatile. They possess reddish-brown bark and offer soft, delicate, scale-like leaves, which are arranged into fan shaped branchlets.

The tree was positioned and planted by my crew Monday morning. Upon returning to the site, a mere two hours later, several large branches had been broken and a sizeable void was clearly visible in a formerly, beautifully shaped tree. The police were notified so that a report of vandalism could be recorded. Although we will attempt to reshape the tree by wiring it back, the end result may be that the broken branches die over the winter.

My question is, “Why did this occur?” Presumably, it is not far different than our recreational basketball court being maliciously spray painted with obscenities, one day after it was freshly paved with asphalt. Or the various structures in our charming town, including the walking bridge over the dam, being periodically marred by graffiti.

About eight months ago, at a township committee meeting, I commented that this was, "not the town I once knew," because of the noticeable divisiveness within our community. I am also aware of the many outstanding residents living in Plumsted, exemplified by the good deeds they perform regularly for our town, as well as their neighbors. I truly appreciate you, the community, for your spirited commitment and passion, however this type of on-going, malicious, degrading of our township must cease, please.

Sincerely, Herb Marinari - Plumsted Township, Deputy Mayor
